Harvick targets championship
Kevin Harvick has targeted winning the NASCAR Winston Cup championship this year after a string of runner-up finishes in recent races, despite trailing points leader Matt Kenseth by the substantial margin of 415 points
The Richard Childress Racing star finished second behind Terry Labonte in yesterday's (Sunday's) Southern 500 at Darlington, the third race in a row he has finished in the runner-up spot. Harvick has been strong since winning at Indianapolis in June, rising from 11th to third in the championship.
With the NASCAR points system rewarding consistency, Kenseth has managed to build a healthy margin at the top of the standings with 11 races remaining, thanks to his impressive 19 top-ten finished. The Roush driver finished 14th on Sunday.
"It's not over," said Harvick. "It's a long shot [to win the title], but we've been a long shot before and overcome the odds and done things they said we couldn't do. If they think it's over, just tell them to quite showing up and we'll keep racing.
"We just have to keep doing the things we're doing. We can't control Matt's fate. We can't control his destiny. We can't control anything he does. All we can do is control ours. Alan Kulwicki came back to win from 270 points down with just six races left [in 1992], so I don't think it's out of the question."
