Grapevine: Johnson donates to fire victims

NASCAR Nextel Cup reigning champion Jimmie Johnson and his Hendrick Motorsports team have led an effort to raise over $1 million which will go to the victims of the recent fires in California that have destroyed over 2000 homes

Johnson and his team will donate their race winnings from their victory at Atlanta Motor Speedway last weekend of $343,861. Lowe's, the main sponsor on the car, will donate an amount equal to that, plus some bonuses raised at their stores.

Also joining the good cause is track owner Bruton Smith, through his Sonic Automotive business. He will also match the race earnings, taking the total donation beyond the million dollar mark.

"I am very proud of everyone who has jumped on board with us to donate winnings to the victims of California fires," said Johnson.

"I appreciate Lowe's, Hendrick Motorsports and Bruton Smith, Sonic Automotive and the NASCAR community for their effort to help out the people in Southern California during this devastating time."

Johnson, a California native, will present a check to the American Red Cross at Texas Motor Speedway this Sunday before the Nextel Cup race.
