Gibbs returns to NFL coaching
Joe Gibbs, whose eponymous NASCAR outfit has won two of the last four Winston Cup championships, is to return to his former job as a coach for the Washington Redskins American Football team
Gibbs coached the NFL squad until 1992, winning three championships in the process. After retiring from Football he started his NASCAR team, which currently runs Tony Stewart and Bobby Labonte.
"Rest assured, I remain personally committed to Joe Gibbs Racing and each and every sponsor who supports the many employees of Joe Gibbs Racing," said Gibbs, whose deal with the Redskins is reportedly worth over $25m.
Jim Makar, the general manager of JGR, said that he did not foresee any major changes in the running of the team.
"We're all real excited about it," said Makar. "I think it's a unique opportunity. He's really fired up about the possibility of doing it, and it's good to see a guy get fired up.
"I don't think it will change day-to-day operations, certainly not the way we race. Joe's more involved on the business level, dealing with our sponsors. That may change a little bit, and we need to talk about that some more. As far as racing and making decisions about how we race, we should be in good shape. We've got a lot of good guys on the team, a lot of depth."
J.D Gibbs, Joe's son, has taken over much of the responsibility for the team, and could now increase his role further.
