Edwards on pole for season finale

Carl Edwards continued to impress in his first full Nextel Cup season, winning at Miami's Homestead Motor Speedway his second pole position of the season - and just at the right time

Edwards is third in the points standing - only 87 points behind leader Tony Stewart - and ahead of tomorrow's season finale, the Roush Racing driver is only one of four still in contention for this year's championship.

"This was a perfect time to win a Bud Pole Award," said Edwards after qualifying. "We just have to go out and do as good as we can. As long as we give our best it will be successful."

Edwards lapped the 1.5-mile oval at an average speed of 176.051 to beat Ryan Newman to pole. Newman is out of contention for the title.

Of the other 'Chase for the Cup' drivers, favourite Stewart qualified 20th. The 2002 champion only needs to finish ninth in tomorrow's Ford 400 to clinch his second title.

Jimmie Johnson, who now lies second in the points, qualified only 32nd while Greg Biffle, fourth in the points, qualified seventh.
