Daytona Practice Washed Out

Heavy rain washed out Thursday practice at Daytona for this weekend's Pepsi 400 - costing teams valuable track time ahead of Friday's qualifying session

The showers left series organisers with no choice but to cancel running and re-arrange Friday's timetable, with a single practice session now due to take place in the morning before the afternoon's qualifying session.

Although some drivers were far from fussed about missing out on running, the teams were more concerned.

Steve Hmiel, crew chief for Dale Earnhardt Jr., said: "We are going to be in kind of a panic because [Friday] will be our only race practice, so we won't have near as much time to tune."

The other worry is for teams who suffered wrecked cars at Talladega and were hoping to use practice to iron out any problems on the rebuilt models.

"We build the bodies as small as we can naturally, so there is going to be some tyre rub," added Hmiel. "Before qualifying and before race practice, it's neat to get a couple of laps to see what rubs and what doesn't.

"The trouble we are going to have is there are going to be a lot of cars smoking tyres on fenders because there is not a lot of new cars based on what happened at Talladega."
