Burton takes first pole of season

Jeff Burton took his first Bud Pole of the season in qualifying for the Monte Carlo 400 at Richmond. He broke the event record by lapping the 0.75-mile D-shaped oval in 21.466s, an average speed of 125.780mph

Bobby Labonte, Jerry Nadeau, Rick Mast and Rusty Wallace round out the top five.

Bill Elliott returned to the track and put the McDonald's Ford in seventh on the grid. The former champion missed the last two races after breaking his knee in a domestic accident.

Qualifying was stopped briefly at Dale Earnhardt's request to check the track for any debris that may have been left after Scott Pruett brushed the wall
on the backstretch and spun out. Earnhardt qualified in 22nd. Pruett was
credited with 37th.

Ward Burton, Elliott, Johnny Benson, Ken Schrader and Mark Martin complete the top ten.

Frontrunners who missed out on a top 25 spot include Ricky Rudd, John Andretti, Mike Skinner, Dale Earnhardt, Jr., Terry Labonte and Sterling Marlin.

Busch Series runner Casey Atwood is making his Winston Cup debut this weekend and has qualified 35th fastest of the 47 cars entered.
