Bobby Labonte Q&A

NASCAR's Winston Cup points leader Bobby Labonte has battled for every one of his 201-strong points lead over Dale Earnhardt. We caught up with him before qualifying took place at Phoenix, as the season reaches its climax

"Continue to do the same things that got us to this point. We have three races left and I feel like we have a chance at three more wins before the season is over. The points will take care of themselves."

"It sounds cliché, but it would be a dream come true. And to think that Terry has already accomplished this, it would make this that much more special. I know our parents are very proud of us already, but this is a neat possibility."

"He will be listed in the Hall of Fame as one of the best drivers of any kind on the face of this planet to ever get behind the wheel of a car. To be able to battle him like we have the second half of the season is awesome. It's something I would have dreamed up as a kid and played over and over in my mind. It shows that he is far from being done as a driver. If anything, he is getting better with age."

"I think it's a credit to both NASCAR and CART. We all know that if the same driver is winning all of the time, the fans are going to get bored. I can't speak for CART, but NASCAR has tried to make sure that we all have a chance each week to win. That's what it's all about, make it a level playing field and let the teams decide who will win the race."

"It probably has not hurt us, but I think if we were all racing Pintos we would still be on top because we have such a great race team at Joe Gibbs Racing. Both the '18' [Labonte's car]and the '20' car [his team mate Tony Stewart's] have had great years, and for us to have the chance at the NASCAR Winston Cup Championship is a tribute to what Joe has built and I am happy to be a part of it."

"Like I said before, we have had a great season and to be able to get Pontiac back on top is a tribute to their [Pontiac's] hard work, but mostly the hard work by all of the employees at Joe Gibbs Racing. As for Joe, I am just proud to be part of such a wonderful organisation. I can see why he has won three Super Bowls and I hope to be able to be part of his first NASCAR Winston Cup Championship. You mentioned Tony. He and his crew chief Greg Zipadelli are a major reason why we are in the position we are in right now. When Joe decided to start a second team, we all sat down and came up with a list of names as to who was going to be the driver. We were all together when we decided to try and get Tony to be part of this organisation. He is a true racer and knows nothing except for being the best and trying to win."

"I think it would be a wonderful opportunity not only for myself and my family to be a part of that, but it would be great for NASCAR in general. I'm not sure when we would be able to as the NASCAR schedule is not getting any shorter, but if there is a way to work it out, I hope I get invited."
