Blundell linked to Winston Cup

Former CART and Formula 1 star Mark Blundell could be on his way to the NASCAR Winston Cup next year if current plans come to fruition

The 35-year-old is understood to be lining up a deal with a top stock car squad for later this year. His only racing this season has been the Le Mans 24 Hours, which he contested with the new MG squad.

NASCAR is renowned for its complete bias towards American drivers, and the most recent 'foreigners' to race in the Winston Cup, besides Canadian road circuit regular Ron Fellows, were Australians Geoff Brabham and Dick Johnson. Current British Touring Car Championship leader Jason Plato has also signalled his interest at switching to the Stateside series, in which the leading drivers are household names across much of the US.

"There is a deal on offer to test," Blundell told Autosport. "If I was offered a drive for next year I would consider it. I have been in the USA for five years and I know what a huge spectacle NASCAR is.

"It would be fantastic to get an English guy in there with the European ovals opening up new opportunities for the future. I have plenty of oval experience," he added.

Blundell has also been linked to a Jaguar F1 testing deal, and said the chances were "not dead yet".

He added: "There are sportscar drives and I still have a lot of single-seater blood left in me."
