Biffle: I can still beat Johnson to title

Sprint Cup championship contender Greg Biffle is adamant that he can still beat Chase leader Jimmie Johnson to the title despite a 149-point deficit with only four races to go

Although mathematically Biffle and a number of drivers are still in the hunt for this year's title, Johnson only needs to keep his current average finishing position from the last six races - fourth place - into the final four to be crowned champion for the third year in a row.

Despite that, Biffle believes Johnson can hit any kind of trouble in the coming races and that could give him the chance of closing down his points lead in the coming weeks.

"We're going to have to have four flawless races is what we're going to have to do and it could be a little bit each race for him," Biffle said. "Obviously, if you do the math, 149 points divided by four, that's obviously what we need to pick up per race - it's got to be those positions or more.

"But we know if he slips that we have to capitalise and if he has a problem that we have got to finish well in that event. We have to finish well the next four in order to win it and we know that he's going to have to have a little slip.

"That could be not running well here, maybe getting a lap down somewhere. He was a lap down at Talladega. He was a lap down somewhere else or not running well and ended up coming back at the end, so it's possible."

Biffle is already looking forward to the season finale where he expects to be still in with a chance of winning the title. He has won at Homestead three times in the last four years and is confident he could get the job done once again.

"I think that we need to be within probably 50 points going into Homestead," said Biffle. "I think that is a reasonable amount of points to make up. Certainly we'd like to see it less than that, but 50 points - it depends on whether he leads a lap - but roughly 12 or 13 spots, that would be feasibly possible for us to win and him to have an average day.

"I think it needs to be more in the 20-30 range probably to have a safer bet at it, but I think we're going to be competitive at Homestead for sure. We've already looked at Homestead's setup a couple days ago when we were talking about Atlanta, but I think we'll be there.

"I think that we can put some ground on him over these next few races and get closer to him."

Back in 2005, Biffle beat Johnson to second place in the standing, overcoming a 50-point deficit to the Californian in the season finale which he won, while Johnson crashed out of the event.
