All-Star Race changes announced

The race will still consist of four different segments, but the first has been increased from 20 to 50 laps, including a mandatory green-flag four-tyre pitstop on lap 25. At the end of the segment the caution flag will wave, allowing for an optional pitstop.

The second and third segments will remain as 20-lap sprints as last year and the finishing order of the third one will determine the starting positions for the final 10-lap segment where the winner takes the big cheque. Last year the final segment consisted of a 20-lap sprint.

"Some of the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race's most spectacular finishes have come using the 10-lap shootout as the final segment, and what better way to celebrate the 25th running of this great event than incorporate that element back into the format," said NASCAR's vice president of competition Robin Pemberton.

Race winners from 2008 and 2009 and past winners of the event over the last ten years are eligible to enter the race. Another three drivers will be able to run for the million-dollar prize, two of them through the 40-lap Sprint Showdown plus another one who gets in the race through the Sprint Fan vote.

"This race is all about winning," said two-time All-Star winner Mark Martin. "There are no points on the line and second doesn't really mean anything. It's all about pride and celebrating with your team.

"I've been fortunate to win the all-star race twice in my career and would love to make it three times, especially driving for Rick Hendrick."

This year's race, to be held on May 16, marks the 25th anniversary of the event.
