Tottenham join Superleague series

Tottenham Hotspur have become the first UK Premier League team to join the new Superleague series

The London club is the 15th, and second from the UK joining Glasgow Rangers, to sign up for the championship which kicks off at Donington Park in three weeks.

"Superleague is an exciting new concept and looks to bring together two of the most popular sports in the world," said Tottentham's executive director Paul Barber.

"As a club, we're always looking for ways to appeal to our global fan base and Superleague gives us the opportunity to do that. Some of the biggest football clubs in the world are already involved and we are pleased to be joining them.

"We intend to be as competitive on the track as we are on the pitch and we hope our fans will join us in supporting the team at Donington Park on August 30-31 for the opening race of the season."

The club have not yet confirmed a driver, but Superleague president Alex Andreu believes plenty of British drivers will by vying for the seat.

"Although the team driver does not have to be the same nationality as the club, we certainly have no shortage of British drivers who are very keen to drive for Tottenham Hotspur," he said.

"England was one of the final pieces of the Superleague puzzle we had to complete and we are thrilled to have a top-line club like Spurs join our championship."

Tottenham's car will be unveiled at the football club's pre-season friendly match against Roma at their White Hart Lane ground on Sunday.

Roma also announced their own Superleague team, which will be run by GP2 team Fisichella Motor Sport, this week.
