Motegi to keep MotoGP's Japanese Grand Prix through 2018
Motegi will remain MotoGP's Japanese home until at least 2018 after series organiser Dorna extended its contract with the Honda-owned track
The venue has been part of the MotoGP calendar since 1999, hosting the Pacific Grand Prix from 2000 to '03 before reclaiming the Japanese GP title when Suzuka was dropped.
Dorna chief Carmelo Ezpeleta said securing the right Japanese venue for MotoGP was essential given that it was the home race for leading teams Honda and Yamaha.
"Japan is where the prominent manufactures of MotoGP such as Honda and Yamaha are based, and the grand prix at Twin Ring Motegi is one of the most important events in the championship," he said.
"We are committed to working closely with Twin Ring Motegi as MotoGP faces the time of innovative changes."
Hiroshi Sada, president of the Mobilityland company that runs the track, added that he was particularly pleased to secure the new deal given the economic situation.
"The economic climate we are under today is never too favourable," said Sada.
"Nevertheless, we aspire to play our part in contributing to the powerful evolution of motorcycle sport culture.
"We are grateful for the understanding of the importance of holding MotoGP in Japan and strong support in realising the renewal of the contract that Dorna has given to us."
