Marquez decided to forget about title and 'attack' for Mugello win

Marc Marquez said he decided to forget the MotoGP championship and just "attack" in his Italian Grand Prix victory battle with Jorge Lorenzo

Marquez's Honda caught Lorenzo's Yamaha in the closing laps at Mugello and grabbed the lead on the final lap, only for the reigning champion to slingshot back ahead out of the last corner and win by 0.019 seconds.

"I did a really good race because this was one of the circuits where always I struggle more," said Marquez.

"I'm happy because we finished second but really close to the victory.

"We did a great race, a great last laps.

"I think in the last laps I forgot the championship.

"I just said 'attack' and didn't care about the rest."

Lorenzo admitted he was lucky Honda is currently behind Yamaha on acceleration and Marquez agreed this was what cost him victory.

"Like always we are losing a little bit on acceleration," he said.

"When I arrived at the last corner I tried to close [the door] but to prepare the exit because I knew Lorenzo was able to overtake me before the finish line.

"During all the race I was behind him and I never caught him completely.

"I caught him on the last lap because he did a mistake at the first corner."

He underlined frustration over this deficit was limited because Honda was trying so hard to address it, and expects progress in the post-race test at Barcelona next month.

"In the end, yeah, you feel frustrated when you see this [deficit], but already when I arrived in parc ferme, [team boss Shuhei] Nakamoto and all the Honda staff said thanks for the race because they know we are struggling," said Marquez.

"We are working 100 per cent to try to improve.

"I cannot say anything because I know they are working really, really hard.

"Normally face to face with another rider I'm strong, but this time I lost on the straight.

"The only two times that's happened are here and in Qatar this year.

"But we know that is our weak point at the moment, but we will improve in the future."

The Mugello result leaves Marquez 10 points behind Lorenzo in the standings.
