MotoGP's top rookie Ben Spies is set to miss the Portuguese Grand Prix after crashing on his way to the grid.
With the conditions at Estoril having finally dried following a weekend of rain, the MotoGP riders were keen to use their reconaissance laps to learn more about the dry track - having not had a single lap on slicks all weekend.
It was during his out-lap that Spies suffered a high-side at Turn 4 and was thrown from his Tech 3 Yamaha. He landed heavily and struggled to get up, eventually being stretchered away with apparent pain in his left ankle.
Spies had qualified fifth on the grid for the race prior to the incident.
