Casey Stoner believes that a late decision to pit for a new rear tyre during qualifying cost him pole position for the British Grand Prix at Silverstone.
The world champion will start the race third, behind Alvaro Bautista and Ben Spies, but believes that there was plenty more pace in his Honda than he was able to unlock during the session, and that the onset of rain with 10 minutes remaining held him back.
"The bike was a real handful early on and I couldn't get it around quickly at all," said the Australian. "But we went in another direction and it was half-decent, so I was pretty confident of getting pole.
"I decided to come in, have a new rear tyre and have a shot at pole. And then it rained. I regret not staying out and having a lap on the old tyre [before the rain began to fall], because I think it still would have been faster.
"It's disappointing, but the weather just pushed this one out of our grasp."
