Wayne Gardner's son Remy to make GP racing debut in Moto3

The 16-year-old will replace injured Kiefer Racing rider Luca Grunwald and Gardner's inclusion comes following confirmation of his wildcard entry in October's Moto3 race at Phillip Island - 25 years after his father won the inaugural Australian Grand Prix.

"I wasn't expecting to be on a GP bike this weekend to be honest, but it's the perfect way to prepare for Phillip Island," said Gardner.

"It's always unfortunate when someone is injured and can't compete, but I'm going to grab the opportunity with both hands and make the most of it.

"I'm hoping to learn as much as I can this weekend and it will be a great experience for me."

Gardner is currently 11th in the Moto3 class of the Spanish CEV Championship with one podium finish to his name and the young Australian expects to put his experience to good use.

"I'm counting on taking the CEV experience I've built up and using it towards racing in the GPs full-time next year," he said.

"I'm under no illusions that I've got to step up a lot of things to make it happen: my fitness, to my mental side, as well as my riding."

His father Wayne is confident that he is ready for the challenge ahead and says it is hard to believe he will be returning to Phillip Island to watch his son race.

"I think he will go well, especially at Phillip Island, and I've got a few tips I can give him without overloading his brain," he said.

"It's strange to think that 25 years on I'll be returning there with my own son racing.

"It will be a proud moment for him and the rest of the family."
