Moto2: Lorenzo wins as Dovizioso retires

Aprilia's Jorge Lorenzo won the 250cc San Marino Grand Prix and increased his lead over Honda rival Andrea Dovizioso to 55 points in the championship after the Italian retired with no points

Dovizioso is now in third on the table after San Marino's Alex de Angelis's fifth place put him one point ahead of the Italian.

Dovizioso, from second on the grid, took the lead from pole-sitter Lorenzo right at the start, and after the Spaniard briefly let Hector Barbera into second place, the pair of Dovizioso and Lorenzo kept position until two thirds of the race.

On lap 17 and and 18 the duo switched position seven times, but at the beginning of lap 19 Dovizioso's engine seized forcing him to retire, allowing Lorenzo to comfortably win with 3.5 seconds over KTM's Hiroshi Aoyama in second.

Aprilia's Barbera finished third seven seconds behind the winner, after KTM's Mika Kallio highsided and retired from that position on lap 22.

Barbera was closely challenged by the sister bikes of Thomas Luthi and de Angelis in fourth and fifth respectively.

Honda's Shuhei Aoyama finished the race in sixth after a race-long battle with Gilera's Roberto Locatelli, whose seventh place is his best result since his horrific practice accident in the second event of the season.

Aprilia's Alvaro Bautista ended up eighth after falling from third place on the tenth lap.

The Hondas of Yuki Takahashi and Julian Simon round up the top ten.
