Wheldon: Win 'a Dream Come True'
Briton driver Dan Wheldon described his win of the 89th Indianapolis 500 as a dream come true, with team owner Michael Andretti equally ecstatic with the result
Wheldon took the lead for the final time from rookie Danica Patrick with seven laps to go. He cruised home under the pace car after Sebastien Bourdais hit the wall on the penultimate lap to bring out the caution.
"This is a dream come true," Wheldon said. "I've loved this event since I was a boy and I finally came and watched in 1999 for the first time. It was incredible. This is the best race in the world. The best drivers and teams are here - this is an emotional moment for me."
The Andretti-Green driver won the race from 16th on the grid, and it is his fourth win from five races this season. The win comes just two years after he flipped upside down in his maiden Indy 500.
Teamowner Michael Andretti, who famously never won the race as driver, celebrated his first Indy 500 victory as team owner.
"This feels as good as if I won it myself," Andretti said.
