The New Zealander, who has three Indy Lights wins at Indianapolis Motor Speedway to his credit, said that he was relishing the prospect of his first start at the 500 after having enjoyed so much success there in junior formulae.

"Indy means more to me than anything else," the 27-year-old said. "Winning at Indy in the Firestone Indy Lights Series is the only thing that kept my career on track, so it's important to me to go there and do well in IndyCar and prove that the results can translate."

Cunningham contested a very limited IndyCar schedule with Sam Schmidt Motorsports last year, but managed a seventh-place finish at Kentucky.

He is scheduled to drive the DW12 for the first time in an open test at Texas on May 7 before moving on to Indianapolis to take part in the rookie orientation programme three days later.
