Vernay switches to Indy Lights
Former Formula 3 Euro Series frontrunner Jean-Karl Vernay is to switch to American racing for 2010, having signed to drive for multiple champion squad Sam Schmidt Motorsports in IndyCar feeder category Indy Lights
The 22-year-old Frenchman joins Philip Major and Pippa Mann in this year's Schmidt line-up, and has already tested for the team on the Homestead oval and Palm Beach road course. Vernay was previously part of Red Bull's young driver scheme and finished fifth in the F3 Euro Series last year, also taking second place in the Macau Grand Prix.
"I'm very excited to come to America this season to race in Firestone Indy Lights with Sam Schmidt Motorsports," Vernay said.
"After a great test last week, I can't wait to get more time in the car and do more development with my engineer. My goal is to win races and the championship again this year for the team and my supporters."
Schmidt said Vernay had already settled into the team well.
"JK's experience and results in Europe are excellent, so we are quite pleased he has decided to further his career in the United States," said Schmidt.
"We tested him at Homestead and Palm Beach and everything just clicked. The chemistry between JK and the team was excellent from the start and we're confident he'll be a great fit for the Sam Schmidt Motorsports organisation in 2010."
