TWR to build Chevy engines

TWR will continue its involvement in the IRL next season as one of five engine builders contracted to produce Chevrolet's all-new V8 unit

TWR to build Chevy engines

The Tom Walkinshaw owned concern has been part of the oval racing series as the constructor of the Infiniti engines, but following the Japanese firm's withdrawal it was forced to look elsewhere for 2003. This has resulted in a three-year contract with Chevy as the American giant gears up for the arrival of Honda and Toyota in the IRL next season.

"Our agreement with TWR will be through at least 2005," said GM racing group manager Joe Negri. "Like our other OEM engine builders - Speedway Engine Development, Menard Engine Group, Roush Industries and VDS Engines - TWR will supply engines to teams to be announced at a later date and will participate in the development of the 2003 Chevy Indy V8."

Chevrolet also announced five teams that will assist in the development of the new, shorter engine, which is expected to produce more than 675bhp. These 'works' teams are 2002 champions Panther Racing, Hemelgarn Racing, Blair Racing, AJ Foyt Racing and Team Menard.

"We anticipate that these teams will field six to eight cars next season when driver and sponsor agreements are finalised," added Negri. "We are also in discussion with other teams that have expressed interest in running Chevy engines. We are prepared to supply up to 18 cars in 2003."

Negri also said that Chevy intends to sell the engine below the IRL's specified price of $120,000.
