Teams complete Homestead test

Four leading Indy Racing League teams have completed two days of testing at the Homestead Motor Speedway, in preparation for the coming season

The IRL opens 2003 at the circuit near Miami, and the Ganassi Racing, Penske Racing, Foyt Racing and Andretti Green Racing Team's all took the chance to run on the circuit.

For Scott Dixon, who did not run on the final day, the test marked his first run in an IRL machine since switching with the Ganassi team from the rival CART series. "I thought that the test went well," said Dixon. "We ran 250 miles and didn't have any problems whatsoever. The IRL car is different than the CART car in that everything happened just a little bit slower. It's not easier to drive, just a different feel."

A.J. Foyt IV returned to the cockpit for grandfather A.J Foyt's team following a crash on the first day of the test. However, the Infiniti Pro Series champion struggled with the extra downforce of the IRL car.

"I was pretty screwed up this morning," said Foyt. "I didn't have any confidence in the car or myself. I was getting frustrated, but my grandfather was patient. He explained I wasn't going fast enough to use all the downforce. After [team-mate] Airton Dare got in it and I saw the times he turned, I knew the car was OK. I got back in the car and got back up to speed. I learned a lot today, maybe more than I wanted to."
