Stewart could race at Indianapolis
Reigning NASCAR Winston Cup champion Tony Stewart could replace Dario Franchitti at Andretti Green Racing for this year's Indianapolis 500, according to reports aired by an Indianapolis TV station
The report aired by WISH-TV said that Stewart will test one of the team's Dallara Honda's on Wednesday, and will then attempt to qualify for the prestigious race. Scot Franchitti will miss the race after sustaining injuries in a motorbike accident, while Tony Kanaan is also doubtful for the race following a crash at the recent event in Motegi.
When asked about the reports, Stewart told The Indianapolis Star: "When I'm ready to say something, we'll send out a press release."
Stewart, who won the IRL IndyCar Series title in 1997, did not race at the Indy 500 last year, but competed in the race five times between 1996 and 2001, achieving a best finish of fifth in 1997.
Following his full-time switch to NASCAR in 1999, Stewart has twice, in 1999 and 2001, raced in the Indy 500 and the Coca-Cola 600 NASCAR race on the same day. Last year, Stewart missed the Indy 500, citing demands of competing in both races. The double duty requires a quick flight from Indianapolis to Charlotte after the 500, and also creates intense travel schedules for testing, practice and qualifying for both races.
