Scheckter forced to retire from third

Potential victor Tomas Scheckter has retired from the Indianapolis 500 with a broken driveshaft, having been running strongly in the top three

The South African and his Luczo Dragon Racing team are only scheduled to contest three races in this year's IRL IndyCar Series, but had been major contenders for the win at Indy, holding a close third behind Scott Dixon and Marco Andretti through the middle stages of the race.

Scheckter's run came to an end when he pitted under a yellow prompted by rookie Alex Lloyd crashing at the final corner. The Luczo Dragon car entered pit road in third, only for the driveshaft failure to prevent it from leaving its pit.

"Very disappointing," said Scheckter. "We gave it a good run, I did what I could do, but now all I can do is say thanks to everyone that made this possible."

The team are set to make their final appearance of 2008 at Sears Point in August.

A good pitstop has now moved Vitor Meira into contention for the win, with the Panther Racing driver now leading from Dixon and Penske's Helio Castroneves with 38 laps to go after a brilliant move between Dixon and Ed Carpenter after the restart.
