Ryan Briscoe set for Ganassi Indianapolis 500 seat

Ryan Briscoe is expected to return to Ganassi's IndyCar line-up for a one-off appearance at the Indianapolis 500 in May

The Australian, currently out of a drive after Penske scaled down to two full-time cars at the end of last year, spent a season with Ganassi in 2005.

That stint ended with a heavy crash at Chicagoland that ruled him out of the final two rounds, but the 31-year-old has reportedly agreed terms to be reunited with the team in a fourth car at Indianapolis.

While the team is yet to officially confirm the deal, Ganassi managing director Mike Hull told AUTOSPORT that the 31-year-old deserves a place on the grid.

"I'm quite frankly surprised [that he is available] because he has certainly proved how capable he is," Hull said.

"It would be great if drivers like Ryan can represent what they do well at the greatest race in the world. At the end of 500 miles, it showcases the best.

"Ryan Briscoe, Dario Franchitti, Scott Dixon, Will Power, Helio Castroneves... guys like that should be in that race, and they should have an opportunity to win it."

Briscoe claimed seven wins during his five-year tenure with Penske and took pole position for last year's Indy 500, although his best finish at the Brickyard is fifth.

He picked up an LMP2 class win for Level 5 Motorsports at the recent Sebring 12 Hours.
