Rice makes Indy debut

Buddy Rice had his first taste of lapping the hallowed Indianapolis Motor Speedway when he tested a 2002-spec Team Cheever Dallara-Infiniti at the track on Wednesday. Rice completed 73 laps, turning a top speed of 223.3mph

"I think Indy is quite exciting and challenging," said Rice, who joined the Cheever squad midway through the 2002 season. "For my first time out, it was fun and fast. I really enjoyed it. I can't wait to come back and see what it is like with the rest of the field out there with me."

Team owner-driver Eddie Cheever explained that the test was more a get-acquainted session for his young driver rather than a developmental test. The team has not yet announced its choice of engines for next season, following Infiniti's decision to withdraw from competition.

"We wanted Buddy to get in some miles at the Speedway so he could go home and think about it over the winter," Cheever said. "Everything we do is geared for winning the Indianapolis 500."
