Pocono signs two-year contract extension until 2018 with IndyCar

Pocono has extended its deal to remain on the IndyCar calendar for another two years ahead of its 2016 event later this month

The triangle-shaped speedway returned to the schedule in 2013 having last featured on the calendar in 1989, and the new deal means it is set for at least six consecutive years of hosting modern-day IndyCar.

Pocono Raceway president and CEO Brandon Igdalsky said: "We are thrilled to share this great news that we will host the IndyCar Series through 2018.

"Our track was originally designed for open-wheel cars and our fans really enjoy the action on the track.

"When you see these cars going six- and seven-wide it is incredible.

"We also received positive feedback from teams and drivers and worked together with IndyCar to make sure Pocono stays on the schedule."

Jay Frye, the IndyCar president of competition and operations, negotiated the extension as the series closes in on announcing its full 2017 schedule in the coming weeks.

"We're thrilled to announce today's two-year extension with Pocono - an iconic oval track with a long history of hosting great open-wheel racing events," Frye said.

"It's very clear that Pocono is one of the favourites amongst the drivers, teams and fans of IndyCar and we look forward to competing there for the foreseeable future.

"We'd also like to thank Brandon and his entire team for all their efforts to make this event a success and we look forward to our race there on August 21."
