Katherine Legge surprised return to US racing was not easier to achieve
US single-seater returnee Katherine Legge has admitted that she never expected to find it so hard to secure a full-time ride in IndyCar
The Briton raced in Champ Car in 2006 and 2007 before returning to Europe to spend three years with Audi in the DTM. She moved back to the US at the start of 2011, but was unable to secure a drive until this year, when she was confirmed as Sebastien Bourdais' team-mate at Dragon Racing for the upcoming IndyCar season.
"I thought I'd come back and was sure I would get a ride," she told IndyCar's official website. "I didn't realise how difficult it would be.
"Once I decided that I was going to come back to IndyCar, I had to find a way to make it happen. I've had a very hard year of work and I had sleepless nights, but it's my dream and I've followed it and I'm very happy it's paying off."
Legge admits that she will need time to get back up to speed after such a long break, but says that having an experienced campaigner like four-time Champ Car champion Bourdais in the other car will help.
"It will take me a few days to get back into it since I haven't been in an open-wheel car for four years," she said.
"I will try to learn as much from Sebastien as I can. There are probably only three or four drivers in IndyCar that I would have loved to have as my team-mate and he's definitely one of them. His experience and talent in developing a car will be a massive advantage for us."
