Josef Newgarden cleared to race at Road America IndyCar round
Josef Newgarden has been cleared to compete in the rest of the Road America IndyCar weekend, two weeks on from his massive Texas crash
The American sustained a broken clavicle and right wrist when his Ed Carpenter Racing Dallara-Chevrolet was collected by Conor Daly's spinning Dale Coyne Racing Dallara-Honda in the rain-disrupted Texas Motor Speedway race on June 12.
Newgarden's car was pinned into the wall cockpit-first during the accident.
He was given permission to drive in practice at Road America on Friday before being reassessed by the IndyCar medical team - who gave him the green light to continue.
Having gone 10th and 13th fastest in the two Friday sessions, covering 30 laps in total, Newgarden said he was expecting a competitive weekend.
"We got through a lot of really good things," he said.
"I feel really good about where we are at, we have a really fast car.
"We opted not to do another tyre run at the end and focus on doing more [on Saturday] and to have more tyres later.
"We made some good changes in that session and I would be surprised if we aren't near the top six [on Saturday]."
ECR lined up JR Hildebrand, who had been part of its expanded Indianapolis 500 line-up, to stand in for Newgarden while he recovered, but the substitute was only required for a pre-race test.
