IndyCar working on non-championship race in China for 2016
IndyCar CEO Mark Miles confirmed on Monday that he is in discussions with officials in China to hold a non-championship race in Beijing in October
When Miles became the CEO of Hulman & Company - the parent company of INDYCAR and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway - he hoped to have three races outside of the western hemisphere that would not be part of the IndyCar championship but provide an opportunity to showcase the series to other parts of the world.
"For many months IndyCar has participated in discussions regarding a non-championship event in the Fengtai District of Beijing, China," Miles said.
"If scheduled, this race would occur in October following the conclusion of the 2016 season.
"At this point, arrangements for this event have not been finalised and a number of important issues must be resolved before such an event can be added to the schedule.
"IndyCar is pleased with the amount of interest in China and the substantial effort that has been made to try and make this proposed event a reality.
"We would hope to share any news on whether this event will occur by early June."
Miles remains very confident of announcing a championship points paying replacement for the Boston street race that was schedule for Labor Day weekend of this year.
That race will likely be at Watkins Glen International or Gateway International Raceway and will take over the Labor Day weekend date on September 4.
