IndyCar alters test rules for 2014, including Lights driver bonus
IndyCar has outlined a more flexible set of testing rules for 2014, as well as offering additional running for teams willing to test current Indy Lights drivers
The series' new rules allow for 18 test days for each full-season team between now and the end of the 2014 season, with those days being used in any combination of engine manufacturer test days, open tests, straightline tests, and full-scale windtunnel work.
"Our objective was to structure the testing rules so that everybody had equal opportunity and an equal number of days," said Derrick Walker, IndyCar's president of competition and operations
"Rather than IndyCar designating specific numbers for each category of testing, the onus is on teams to utilise days as they feel is best for their individual programme."
In addition to the two additional days on offer to a team that tests a current Lights driver, any new entrant will be permitted four additional days of off-season testing.
The two day Spring Training test, which is mandatory for Leaders Circle entrants, will again be held at Barber Motorsports Park on March 17-18, with other open tests having been scheduled for the Indianapolis road course on April 30 and Fontana on August 27.
Engine manufacturers Chevrolet and Honda will have five on-track test days each.
Mileage amassed while using a manufacturer development engine does not count against a team's maximum of 10,000 miles during team tests, open tests and race events in a calendar year.
