Hamilton secures IndyCar return

The 47-year-old American has contested the last three Indianapolis 500s having made a comeback following the 2001 crash that left him with devastating leg injuries.

This year Hamilton will extend his IndyCar participation beyond Indy for the first time since his return, and will also drive for de Ferran Luczo Dragon at Texas - the scene of his accident - and another yet to be determined oval race.

"I will have mixed emotions for sure going to Texas and competing on that track for the first time since the accident, but it is important for me to return to Texas and to finish that race," said Hamilton, who required 21 operations to rebuild his feet in the wake of the crash.

Team boss Gil de Ferran believes Hamilton's experience will be an asset to the team and its full season driver Raphael Matos.

"I have known Davey for many years and he still harbours strong ambitions as a driver particularly regarding the Indy 500," de Ferran said.

"He has also shown a keen interest in helping develop our team and young drivers. He is a highly experienced oval driver that can not only bring us a good result, but very importantly, can help bring us a point of reference and lift the whole team's performance. His presence in the team I am sure will be beneficial to Rafa, who for the first time will have a team-mate in IndyCar."

Hamilton's best result in his three recent attempts at Indianapolis was ninth for Vision Racing on his comeback in 2007. He expects to be a strong contender with de Ferran Luczo Dragon.

"They have proven in a short time that they have what it takes to be competitive, and I believe this is a great opportunity for me to put a strong showing at the Indy 500," said Hamilton.
