Haas tipped for switch
Longtime Champ Car team owner Carl Haas, whose team made its first appearance in an IRL IndyCar event in the Indianapolis 500 last month, may soon be running an IndyCar Series team fulltime, according to this week's Autosport magazine
Haas has reportedly signed a £9m deal to run in the IRL from next year, although it is unclear whether he will continue to have a presence in Champ Cars. If not, his 20-plus year partnership with movie legend Paul Newman, an outspoken IRL critic, is almost certain to end.
Haas said: "I don't know at this point but anything is possible. You know where my heart is, but I'd rather not talk about it."
The deal is thought to have been sweetened by both Indianapolis president Tony George and engine supplier Honda. If it goes ahead, Haas would follow the teams of Bobby Rahal and Adrian Fernandez into the IRL from Champ Cars.
Newman, however, is tipped to be lining up his own team, possibly in conjunction with racing legend Mario Andretti.
