Foyt IV returns to grandfather's team
AJ Foyt IV will return to his grandfather AJ Foyt's IndyCar line-up for Texas this weekend after the team parted company with Paul Tracy
Former Champ Car champion Tracy drove for Foyt at Milwaukee after regular driver Vitor Meira suffered back injuries during the Indianapolis 500. Both Tracy and Foyt had been open to continuing the partnership for the rest of the season, but decided to go their separate ways after the car proved off the pace last weekend, with Tracy finishing six laps down in 17th.
Foyt IV won the 2002 Indy Pro Series title for the family team and then drove for it for the first three years of his IndyCar career. Having lost his Vision Racing drive this season, the 25-year-old rejoined his grandfather's squad for Indy and has now been drafted back in for what is currently a one-off appearance.
"I'm excited to get the opportunity to run another race," said Foyt IV. "Hopefully we get the result we're looking for."
Foyt said his grandson's usually strong form on the big ovals - and Texas in particular - made him the best choice for this race.
"Anthony has always run well at this track," he said. "He hasn't had the results but most of that was because of things that he couldn't help — tyres going flat or problems on pitstops.
"He likes the track which is good because a lot of drivers don't care for it. Plus we've worked with him so we know what he likes, and he knows what he wants from these cars."
The team expects Meira to be sidelined until the end of September, which means he might not return until the season finale at Homestead.
