Ex-F1 driver Chilton impressing Chip Ganassi Racing IndyCar team
Former Marussia Formula 1 driver Max Chilton has impressed Chip Ganassi Racing with how he is adapting to IndyCar
Following a season in Indy Lights and as a Nissan LMP1 driver, Chilton joins the powerhouse team this year, alongside reigning champion Scott Dixon, Tony Kanaan and Charlie Kimball.
As the Briton has completed his first tests and come to terms with his new environment, Ganassi managing director Mike Hull has liked what he has seen.
"We did two tests including Sonoma, which was a Chevrolet test for all four of our drivers and then we did a test with Max at Fontana, and that was his Rookie Orientation test to be able to satisfy his IndyCar licensing requirement on a big oval," Hull said.
"Max did really well in both tests."
"I think what helps is he has been involved in a big system.
"He's a systems guy so he understands how to utilise the resource for himself and share information with his team-mates, and how to use that information to read the racetrack while he learns to drive the IndyCar.
"You have to respect each other and the fact we are in the industry together, and what we do at Chip Ganassi Racing is get the most out of today.
"Max certainly fits well into the system."
Hull declined to place specific expectations on Chilton's output this year, but emphasised that all four Ganassi drivers would receive the same opportunities.
"I expect results," Hull said.
"We put into Max, Charlie, Scott and Tony equally. From that equality we expect results.
"That expectation will be defined as we go through the season with all four of our drivers.
"We don't have a number one driver and number two driver and number three driver.
"All of our four drivers are treated equally and they share with each other. We work really, really hard to retain that.
"In Formula 1, you don't have that because you have a number one driver and a driver with two drivers per entry."
