Drivers praise Kentucky improvements

Drivers have given resurfacing work at Kentucky Speedway the thumbs up on Monday, six weeks after many of them complained about rough patches on the oval track's racing surface

Three IRL IndyCar Series teams convened for a one-day test to prepare for Kentucky's Belterra Casino Indy 300 on August 17. Indianapolis 500 winner Gil de Ferran (Penske), Team Rahal driver Kenny Brack and Andretti Green Racing's Bryan Herta turned laps on the 1.5-mile tri-oval.

"The reason that we're here is to survey the changes," said de Ferran. "Obviously, the speedway people have been very accommodating, trying to do everything they can to get this track in as good of shape as they can have it."

During a test on June 20, drivers complained about rough patches in turns one and two, and De Ferran labelled it "unbelievably bumpy." Bumps in turns one, two and four were ground down and patched, while a slight indentation in the surface around the start-finish line has been removed.

Brack said: "It's pretty rough, still, but at least it's not bottoming and stuff like that. It's a big difference from that perspective."
