Dare undergoes surgery
Airton Dare underwent surgery late Thursday to repair a broken leg and broken arm after a hard crash during practice at Texas Motor Speedway, Indy Racing League officials reported
Dare was airlifted to Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas after his car crashed in the fourth turn shortly after practice began for the IRL's Bombardier 500. Dare was listed in stable condition Thursday night with a broken femur and broken humerus. He was awake and alert before the surgery, officials reported.
Dare had been chosen to drive the A.J. Foyt Racing No. 5 car Wednesday to replace Shigeaki Hattori, whose sponsorship deal with Epson had reached an end after the Indianapolis 500. After the crash, Jaques Lazier was entered as the driver of Foyt's No. 5T.
Lazier, recently replaced by Vitor Meira in the Team Menard entry, did not attempt to qualify Foyt's car. Instead, he'll start 22nd in the 22-car field for Saturday's race. Shaken by Dare's crash, his teammates searched for answers.
"I thought about Airton," said A.J. Foyt IV, who qualified 14th. "It's too bad that something happened to the car and he crashed like that, but he's going to be fine."
