Clash ends Brazilian pair's title hopes

A tyre-rubbing incident in the IRL IndyCar Series season finale at Texas Motor Speedway ended the championship hopes of Helio Castroneves and Tony Kanaan - and may have put a kink in the Brazilian duo's friendship

Clash ends Brazilian pair's title hopes

Kanaan was moving around the outside of Castroneves on the 180th lap when wheels on the two cars touched. It was enough to deflate the left rear on Kanaan's Dallara-Honda - and later Castroneves' Dallara-Toyota also limped to the pits with a flat right front.

"I gave him plenty of room, and we touched," Kanaan said. "I don't know what happened, but it's unfortunate. I had a run on him, I passed him, I was ahead of him. It's a shame to lose a championship like that."

Castroneves said: "Neither of us wanted to finish like that, especially having a chance to win. When he went to pass, we touched and, all of a sudden, the cars touched. It was close, very close. It is a shame. It was not the way it was supposed to be."

The two began racing karts together during their early teens in Brazil, and competed against one another in the Champ Car World Series. This season, they were reunited when Kanaan joined Andretti Green Racing and switched to the Indy Racing League. Castroneves, who finished 13th in the race, edged his friend for third place in the final standings.

"Next year I'm going to take care every week instead of getting out in the end of it and losing everything," Castroneves said.
