Tony Kanaan answered his frightening warm-up accident with a superb drive from the back of the field to third at Baltimore.
Kanaan had been launched into a huge airborne crash after suffering brake failure in warm-up, but was able to take KV Racing team-mate EJ Viso's spare car for the race.
Having helped him mechanics to prepare the car in an act of solidarity, Kanaan then delivered his third podium of the season as opportunistic tactics played into his favour.
"Starting where we did, we just tried to make something happen - we had nothing to lose," Kanaan said.
"I was helping my guys at the start as they felt really down, they were really scared. It was a human mistake and I felt I needed to support them, say 'forget about it'. Tomorrow we will have a chat, but it wasn't doing us any good to point fingers.
"Then in the race, we started moving up the field and I was up to 22nd before the pile-up where I passed 15 cars - I think I broke my record.
"After that the way the series is, it's so competitive that I knew that I couldn't expect a miracle; we had to do something different. Me and Oriol [Servia] pitted on the yellow and it worked.
"Until the last stop I don't think I raced, I was just patient and looked for something to happen - it ended up working really well, a great result."
