Double CART Champ Car champion Alex Zanardi has confirmed that IndyCar bosses have approached him to race in the Las Vegas round that could see the winner receive a $5m bonus.
The Italian confirmed the offer but refused to commit to entering the race that IndyCar will offer the bonus if any non-series regular driver wins the race.
"We had conversation about it," said the Italian in the Indianapolis Star. "But I didn't think [IndyCar boss Randy Bernard] was serious. I'm an old fart now. I'd love to be in it but it's one thing to talk abou it, another to put something together and do it."
Zanardi, now 44 years old, has not raced a single seater since losing both of his legs in a Champ Car crash at the Lausitzring in 2001.
