Indianapolis Indy Lights: Matthew Brabham takes first pole
Matthew Brabham triumphed in a close-fought Indy Lights qualifying session to secure pole for the opening race of this weekend's double-header on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course
Brabham set his 1m18.4256s just after most drivers had stopped to put on a set of new tyres, and while all of his rivals improved their times over the final minutes, none were able to do so by enough to prevent him from becoming the first rookie to claim pole this season.
Gabby Chaves came closest; the Colombian falling just 0.0796 seconds short on an afternoon where the top four were covered by just over 0.1s.
Jack Harvey finished up third-fastest alongside Luiz Razia; and all four drivers had enjoyed a stint at the top at some point during the session.
Zach Veach's title campaign hit its first stumble of the year; the Andretti driver unable to match the speed of the lead group and finishing up 0.3s adrift in fifth, where he will line up alongside Alex Baron.
