Penske Acura squad leads Daytona 24 Hours practice

The Penske Acura squad topped both sessions of free practice ahead of qualifying later today for this weekend's Daytona 24 Hours

Juan Pablo Montoya was quickest aboard the #6 Acura in the first practice period for the IMSA SportsCar Championship opener, before Ricky Taylor topped the order in the sister #7 car during the second session.

Montoya posted a 1m49.917s in the 60-minute opening session held on a damp track, which put him just 0.039s up on Olivier Pla in the second-placed Mazda RT24-P.

Taylor ended up more than two tenths quicker than the next best Daytona Prototype international on a dry track in a 90-minute second session that finished in light drizzle.

The 2017 winner of the Daytona enduro jumped to the head of the times after an early red-flag stoppage with a 1m35.359s, before improving to a 1m34.904s.

Oliver Jarvis went second with a 1m35.274s in the Mazda he shares with Pla and Tristan Nunez and then lowered that mark to 1m35.119s before the conditions deteriorated in the closing minutes.

The second of the Mazda Team Joest entry took third in the times with a 1m35.430s from Harry Tincknell set early in the session.

Cadillac, which has won the past three editions of the Rolex-sponsored 24 Hours, took third and fourth in the two sessions.

Matheus Leist was three tenths off Montoya's pace with a 1m50.316s aboard the best of the JDC-Miller Caddy DPi-V.Rs in the first session, while Wayne Taylor Racing's Ryan Briscoe trailed the Acura at the top of the times by more than half a second with a 1m35.467 set early in session two.

Fastest LMP2 car across the two sessions was the DragonSpeed ORECA-Gibson 07 in which Ben Hanley posted a 1m37.418s in the second session.

Porsche blocked out the top two positions in the GT Le Mans class in both sessions.

Earl Bamber was fastest in the damp during session one with a 1m57.031s aboard the #912 Porsche 911 RSR run by the factory CORE Autosport squad, edging out Nick Tandy in the sister car by three tenths

Laurens Vanthoor, who won the GTLM title with Bamber last year, went quickest in the dry with a 1m42.508s, which was six tenths up on Tandy's 1m43.150s.

Chevrolet ended up third fastest behind the Porsches in both session with its new mid-engined eighth-generation Corvette courtesy of times set by Antonio Garcia.

The Spaniard's 1m43.410s in the #3 Chevrolet Corvette C8.R in the dry in session two left him just over two tenths down on Tandy.

Oliver Gavin was fourth fastest in the dry in the second of the Corvette Racing entries, while Jesse Krohn set the best BMW time of the day in one of the Rahal-run M8 GTEs with a 1m44.204s.
