Detroit United SportsCar: Curran/Cameron win for Action Express
Dane Cameron and Eric Curran combined to give Corvette a hometown United SportsCar Championship win with their victory for Action Express on the streets of Detroit on Saturday
The duo triumphed in an eventful race that was far closer than their 18.6-second winning margin suggested.
Indeed, it could have been a Corvette 1-2-3-4 but for a flurry of late incidents.
Joao Barbosa was running right behind Cameron in the final minutes of the race in the sister car, and with the next-closest rival another 10s down the road, the pair seemed set to fight all the way to the flag.
That went out the window when Barbosa spun just a couple of laps before the end, and by the time he got his car pointed in the right direction, Oswaldo Negro had passed him in his Michael Shank Racing Ligier.
Barbosa was forced to settle for third, ahead of Ganassi's Joey Hand.
Corvette's other strong challenger came in the form of the Wayne Taylor Racing car shared by Jordan and Rickey Taylor.
Jordan had jumped Christian Fittipaldi to take the lead on a restart mid-way through the race, but his hopes were dashed when he was forced to serve a late drive-through for tipping Townsend Bell into the barriers.
Renger van der Zande combined with Mirco Schultis to win the PC class for Starworks, while Ian James and Mario Farnbacher picked up the GTD honours. The GTLM class did not participate in this round.
The mixed weather and slippery conditions were responsible for a few incidents during the afternoon, including a spin by Bruno Junqueira that inadvertently collected Tom Kimber-Smith as well.
But the worst came after the flag, when four GTD class cars spun at the first corner after crossing the finish line.
In the wake of the crash, Jan Heylen was taken to the infield medical centre for an assessment.
