Masters Historic Racing reveals 2021 calendar
Masters Historic Racing has unveiled a nine-event European calendar for 2021, with a schedule designed to be as free from potential COVID disruption as possible
No fewer than 10 events were cancelled this season due to the impact of the pandemic, including the season-opener at Portimao, the Silverstone Classic, Spa Six Hours and support races to European Le Mans Series rounds at Paul Ricard and Monza.
The 2021 campaign will feature two UK events in April and May before venturing overseas for the first time in mid-June and culminating at the Algarve International Circuit in Portugal.
A Masters spokesperson said: "After the 2020 season was hit by cancellations, Masters has carefully planned a 2021 European calendar that is aimed at coping with the possible continuing backlash of the crisis while mitigating the risk of travel restrictions continuing into the early part of the new year."
The season will start with a test day on 18 March at Donington Park before a new, early season Donington Masters Historic Race Weekend on Good Friday and Easter Saturday (2-3 April).
The next date will be the Masters Historic Festival at Brands Hatch, maintaining its traditional late-May (29-30) slot on the Grand Prix circuit.
The first event in mainland Europe will be the French Historic Grand Prix at Paul Ricard in mid-June before the amended date for the Historic Grand Prix at Zandvoort (16-18 July).
The Silverstone Classic and Zolder Historic Grand Prix will run in late July and August, while dates at the Spa Classic (October 1-3), Espiritu de Montjuic at Barcelona (22-24 October) and Masters Portimao Festival (29-31 October) complete the season.
Masters will again focus on five core series of Masters Historic Formula 1, Masters Historic Sports Cars, Masters Endurance Legends, Gentlemen Drivers and Masters Pre-66 Touring Cars.
At Donington, Brands Hatch and Silverstone, these will be joined by stand-alone Pre-66 Mini races, composing a Masters Mini Triple Crown for 2021.
The Masters 2021 events will be boosted by the addition of a seventh series that will provide demonstration laps for powerful single-seaters of the last five decades, ranging from F1 and Formula 5000 to GP2, Indycars and Formula 3000.
