Fittipaldi to be reunited with favourite F1 Lotus 72 at Goodwood FoS

Emerson Fittipaldi will drive his favourite Lotus 72 chassis 5 at the 2019 Goodwood Festival of Speed, forty-six years after he crashed the same Formula 1 car at Zandvoort

Fittipaldi will take the restored car up the famous hill as part of a major celebration of Lotus grand prix cars at the event.

The car has only just been rebuilt, after spending four decades as a damaged monocoque in the Lotus stores.

Five years ago, Classic Team Lotus started a painstaking rebuild and the car, which Fittipaldi says was his favourite Lotus 72 chassis, is now ready to run in public for the first time since his ill-fated qualifying session for the 1973 Dutch Grand Prix.

Chassis 72/5 was raced almost exclusively by Fittipaldi and he won in Gold Leaf colours in the 1970 US GP and then raced it in JPS colours to win the '72 Austrian and Italian F1 races.

Clive Chapman heads up Classic Team Lotus and it was his idea to finally start work on rebuilding the damaged car.

"It is extraordinary that the car survived for so many years and it was very lucky that it was not thrown into a skip," said Chapman, son of Lotus boss Colin Chapman.

"I think that is a mark of the sentimental attachment that my father had for the car, given his constant focus on the future and the team's perennial battle for more space.

"We've been restoring it gradually. It's ready to run and Emerson kept asking about it, as he's keen to come and drive it. But I don't think we'll ever race it."
