2018 Silverstone Classic to host dedicated 'Tin Top Sunday'
In the British Touring Car Championship's 60th anniversary year, the 2018 Silverstone Classic will honour four decades of saloon and touring car racing with a dedicated 'Tin Top Sunday'
The programme on the Sunday of the July 20-22 event will be dominated by period touring car action, with four races covering the pre '66 U2TC grid, the Trans-Atlantic Touring Car Trophy for pre '66 V8s, the Historic Touring Car Challenge for cars of the 1970s and '80s and the Super Touring Car Trophy for the BTCC cars of the '90s.
With the potential for more than 50 cars on each grid, around 200 tin tops will race on the Silverstone Grand Prix circuit during the third and final day of the world's biggest historic and classic racing festival.
"These four evocative grids will be a wonderful tribute to 60 memorable years of great BTCC action," said event boss Nick Wigley.
"The BTCC boasts an incredible history of thrills and spills stretching right back to 1958 and in its diamond anniversary year we are excited to be celebrating its unrivalled provenance both on and off the track."
Adding to the celebrations will be past and present drivers, with plenty of notable touring car aces expected to race across the four events.
British Touring Car champions Matt Neal, Gordon Shedden, John Cleland, Tim Harvey, and Colin Turkington, as well as stalwarts Jeff Allam, Gianfranco Brancatelli, Rob Huff, Mike Jordan and Steve Soper are all likely to be racing.
The under two-litre pre '66 (U2TC) race will be populated by Lotus Cortinas and Mini Coopers while the American V8s from the same era have their own race for the Trans-Atlantic Trophy.
