In-form Ben Mitchell aiming for Historic Formula Ford crown

A week after scoring a debut double win in Historic Formula 2, Ben Mitchell will try and win the Historic Formula Ford Championship at Silverstone this weekend

The 25-year-old racer from Cheltenham scooped a stunning double at the Dijon-Prenois track last weekend as he gave the ex-Stephen South March 782 its first races in more than 30 years.

Fresh from restoration by the Retro Track and Air team, the March performed faultlessly and Mitchell drive it to a famous double win on his 2-litre F2 debut.

While Mitchell won twice in France, Robert Simac (ex-Jean-Pierre Jaussaud March 712M) secured the Jochen Rindt Trophy for the 1600cc F2 cars and ended the season as overall top scorer in Historic F2 for the sixth time in a row.

This weekend, Mitchell and Cameron Jackson will settle the Historic Formula Ford title at Silverstone after one of the most fiercely-contested seasons in the 24-year history of the pre-1972 championship.

"I've got to beat Cameron and I'm looking forward to two good clean races," said Mitchell.

"You never know what can happen and we'll just see how it goes.

"But the Formula Ford is sure to feel a bit slow after racing the Formula 2 car at Dijon last weekend."

Heading into the weekend Jackson has a four-point advantage when dropped scores are factored in.

However, it is really a winner-takes-all scenario, and two wins for either driver would seal the crown.

Each has scored six wins to date this season.

Mitchell (Merlyn Mk20) is trying to match his father Westie, champion in 2009, and his younger brother Sam who won the title in '13.

Jackson, meanwhile, races a Lola T200 run by the team of record-breaking five-time champion Neil Fowler.
