Qualifying: Lammers on pole

Jan Lammers gave his Racing For Holland squad the perfect present for rebuilding his Dome S101 after a free practice accident by claiming a third consecutive FIA Sportscar Championship pole position on the ultra fast Dijon Prenois circuit in France

The Dutchman stopped the clocks at 1m10.901s to head off the Pescarolo Sport Courage of Franck Lagorce, whose circuit knowledge was not quite enough to claim the pole as he finished half a second off the Judd powered car.

Lammers was more than satisfied with his time but would not be drawn on the possibility of he and his team sealing the championship in Sunday's race.

"Sure, we have a nice lead in the points table (17 points) but we are not thinking about the mathematics too much just yet," said the 1988 Le Mans winner. "After Val's [Hillebrand] accident yesterday the boys had a very late night but this goes a nice way towards thanking them for the hard work and I hope that we can give them more this time tomorrow."

For the first time this season Racing For Holland have entered a second car for racing veteran Beppe Gabbiani and Bolivian racer Felipe Ortiz. This chassis was the one that the team used to finish a very creditable eighth at this year's Le Mans 24 Hours. The car lines up third on the grid, sandwiching the Pescarolo Sport Courage C60 Peugeot.

The SR2 class for 3-litre cars saw the Lucchini Alfa of Mirko Savoldi take the class pole with the British pairing of Sam Hignett and John Stack just behind with their Team Jota Pilbeam Nissan. Other British racers to show well were Mike Millard and Phil Armour in the Rapier 6 Nissan who placed 11th and British GT regular Rob Croydon who partnered Paul Daniels to 13th on the grid.
