Panoz turns laps of new Mexico City circuit
David Brabham became the first driver to record a lap of the revised Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez in Mexico City, when he drove a Panoz LMP-01 sportscar there on Tuesday
The Australian driver, recently sacked by the Panoz squad, completed the laps as part of the inauguration ceremonies for the circuit, which will host an American Le Mans Series race in 2003 and the CART season finale on November 17.
Brabham was impressed with improvements made to the circuit, at which he had previously competed in Formula 1, saying: "The track layout is fantastic and the new facilities they have put in are simply world-class. This is going to be a brilliant venue for sports car racing. The track is wide and fast and has plenty of passing opportunities."
Mexican racer Jimmy Morales, who competes in the Mexican McCormack Cup Mustang Series, also drove the Panoz at the event. "Mexican fans are really going to love these cars when they come to town next year," said Morales. "Bringing the ALMS to Mexico next year will really open a lot of opportunities for many young Mexican drivers."
The Panoz, along with Champion Racing's Audi R8, will also run demonstration laps of the circuit during the inaugural CART event.
