McRae quick at Le Mans

Colin McRae proved to be right on the pace on his first experience of the Le Mans circuit in today's (Sunday) official pre-race test

The Prodrive Ferrari 550 Maranello driver set a best time of 3m56.716s on his final flying lap, a mark just 0.690s off team-mate Rickard Rydell's fastest time in the car.

Despite some setup difficulties during the test, McRae was content with the progress made on his only opportunity to test the car at the ciruit before qualifying for the race on June 12-13.

"I've enjoyed it, but the main objective for today was for me to get used to the circuit and to work on the car," said McRae, who emphasised that he was not gunning for an eye-catching time. "I still have some more time to find, but we also need to do some more work on the car.

Despite his relative lack of circuit racing experience, McRae had little difficulty in familiarising himself with the circuit.

"I'm still not quite up to speed in the Porsche Curves. On the rest of the circuit you can make a mistake and get away with it, but there you really have to ease your way to the pace because you'll end up in the barriers. Apart from that and maybe needing to carry a little more speed on the entry to Indianapolis there wasn't a problem."
